Jackie was killed early in this deployment to Vietnam.

When Jack was killed, I got a call from my dad that his mom wanted to know if I would escort his body home for the funeral. Of course I was honored to, and I still have all of the TDY Orders that allowed an Air Force guy to escort a Marine friend home. It was just unreal, since Jack and I had been such good friends at school. One time we figured: he would hide at my house, sleep under the bed, and we'd push my dad's Jeep Panel truck down the road, and deliver papers for Jack's route. Were we nuts? But we did that one time.
I would tell the barber that I wanted a haircut like the Beach Boys (like Jack had), and he'd say, "Too bad!"
We knew the words to every hot rod song, and spent hours sanding his 39 Ford Coupe, got a lot of 40 Ford parts, and then it would rain and rust overnite! Ahhhh! My mom wrote a poem about "2 guys and their 40 Ford, and how one was taken early..." It was really nice. I was proud to have had Jack as my friend. I have thought over the years, how sad it was that there were so many things he never got to see, and how young 19 really is.
When I was in Washington, DC, I went to the Viet Nam War Memorial, and they only had the Wall of names completed, and I found Jack's name there, but they had a statue that was going to be added, and the model of the statue had one of the guys that made me smile, because it looked so much like Jack.

When Jack's family moved in next door he and my brother John became friends. They went off to Army training together. Jackie didn't come back. My brother did and I'm so grateful but I'm sorry about Jack.

I remember Jack in our neighborhood and grade school. He use to protect us girls on our bicycles from the neighborhood bullies when we were out ridding around.I remember talking to Jack before he shipped out for Vietnam. I will always remember him telling me he was scared but felt it was his duty to go. I told him I would see him when he got back. He was the best and there are many times I feel he is still looking out for me.
I saw his name on the Vietnam Wall in DC and I can't begin to tell you how moving it was. I think about him often especially reconnecting with old schoolmates.
In loving memory Jack

He was a fun guy to be around. Yes he was one of the first out of our class to lose his life in Nam. So sad. RIP my friend.
