After reading Mike McClure's school story about Ms. Payne's Latin Class, I am moved to add to the events that occurred under the Roman Empire of Berniece!
Most memorable of the two years of Latin classes for me were:

The day Ms. Payne left the room to go to the office and turned in the doorway and said "Now, I want you all to be good Roman Citizens while I am out of the room." As soon as she was out of sight someone (I honestly can't remember who) dashed to the front of the room and drew a big black moustache on her beloved bust of Caesar sitting on her desk. Upon her return we all waited several minutes for the anticipated hilarity that was about to occur. Upon discovery of this vandalism she pulled her hanky from her dress sleeve and began to cry. We all burst out laughing.

On another day she entered her supply closet in the back of the room at which time someone shut and locked the door. She began to pound on the door and wail until a "Brave Roman Citizen" dashed over, opened the door and hurried back to their seat without being spotted by her. The class convinced her that it must have accidentally closed and locked by itself and of course there was more hilarity!

Anyone who took Ms. Payne's class has to remember gathering around the piano and singing Christmas Carols in Latin...........OMG!
Among the "Good Roman Citizens" were some "Bad Roman Citizens" who chose to sing loudly in a made up foreign language. Poor Ms. Payne could never figure out who they were.

When I look back on all of this I still smile at the "good old days" but feel deeply sorry for what she had to endure.
